How to Improve Your Car’s Fuel Efficiency & Save on Gas
Fuel prices seem to rise with no end in sight, and for many car owners, finding ways to improve fuel efficiency has become a priority. Whether you’re driving a compact car or a larger vehicle, there are several strategies you can implement to get more miles out of every gallon of gas, saving you money in the long run. Improving fuel efficiency not only helps reduce your fuel costs but also reduces your carbon footprint. One of the easiest and most effective ways to improve fuel efficiency is by ensuring your tires are properly inflated. Under-inflated tires create more rolling resistance, which forces the engine to work harder, thus consuming more fuel. Check your tire pressure regularly (especially before long trips) to ensure they are inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended levels. This simple step can improve gas mileage by up to 3%, depending on your vehicle.
Drive Smoothly and Avoid Rapid Acceleration
Your driving habits play a major role in how efficiently your car uses fuel. Rapid acceleration and sudden braking waste gas and put additional strain on your engine. Instead, try to drive smoothly by gradually accelerating and braking gently. Maintaining a steady speed, particularly on highways, will not only improve fuel efficiency but also reduce the overall wear and tear on your car’s components.
Reduce Excess Weight and Drag
Carrying extra weight in your vehicle, especially in the trunk, can decrease fuel efficiency. For every extra 100 pounds in your car, you may lose up to 2% of fuel economy. Avoid carrying unnecessary items and, if possible, remove roof racks when they’re not in use. These accessories can increase wind resistance, lowering your miles per gallon (MPG).
